Business success, and life success for that matter, is not accomplished in the big moments. It is accomplished when the business is faithful in a million small steps every day. What do we mean?
The nitty-gritty of the small steps in a business takes many forms. From changing the "Closed" sign to reflect "Open for Business" to counting down the cash drawer, a small business does not thrive in the big moments, but in the faithful little ones. Some of the small steps that could use reconsideration are things like:
- Apply Payments Consistently: If you have a customer with multiple accounts, consider applying their payments to the oldest account first. Then, work toward the newest. This method of applying payments helps your customers to know what to expect. There are no "surprise collection accounts" for your customers because of inconsistent payment application.
- Report Payments Frequently: Nothing has the potential to frustrate your customers more than a closed paid account at your office yet open with a third party such as a collection agency. Letting your vendors know immediately about the payment of your accounts fosters a sense of trust with your customer and cuts frustration out of the picture.
- Write-Off Accounts Consistently: When your customers have clear and consistent expectations, this tends to foster clear and consistent communication. If you do not have a consistent write-off date, a date which each customer is expected to understand as your last attempt for payment, you could be operating on feelings not facts. Inconsistency here costs time and money.
