Do we even have to mention this at this point?

We live in a digital age. If you are not very familiar with words and concepts like cyber security, phishing, ransomware, or hacking chances are you are living under a rock and your business is a sitting duck for being completely taken down by digital attacks. We all cringe when the news reports major entities housing our data report a breach and our information is potentially exposed. What is your business doing to protect itself? Here are some bare minimums you need in place.

  • Passwords: We've heard that great passwords contain an uppercase letter, a number, a haiku, a gang sign, a hieroglyph, and the blood of a chicken, but we haven't verified that. Keeper Security, Last Pass, and Zoho Vault are three password management tools that you should seriously consider for your business (and for your personal use). They can create strong passwords, chicken blood excluded.
  • Two-Factor Authentication: Besides a strong password, two-factor (also multi-factor or two-step) authentication serves as an additional step in the securing of your information. Two-factor authentication normally requires not only a username and password but also a temporary code sent to your email or cellphone. Enable this feature for all accounts if it is not set by default.
  • Software Updates: Automatic security and patch updates to your software is essential. This will help keep your business software up-to-date and any vulnerabilities "patched."
  • Antivirus, Anti-Malware & Firewall: Antivirus and anti-malware software offer defensive services on your devices and prevent malicious code from being executed. Firewalls prevent defense on the "front door" of your network so that nothing malicious enters. Having these installed and rightly configured are essential.
  • Learn: KnowBe4 is a great resource to stay up to date about phishing scams. They also provide awesome tools that your business can use to protect itself from cyber-attacks, many of which are free. Human error is #1 in cyber-attacks.
There are many other factors to consider when implementing a security plan to keep your business safe. Whether you are a staff of three or three thousand, consider these steps as minimal in keeping your data secure.
